Free Music Resources

We’ve had a few occasions where we needed some royalty free music for projects. But even better than royalty free is completely free! Here are a couple of great resources to get free music for your video or other projects.

First, Kevin Macleod at Incompetech is a fantastic musician and offers lots and lots of tracks for free use — without any payment. These are all original works so this is just a wonderful contribution to the world. He does request a $5 donation if you use his works, but it is completely voluntary. Full details are on his site.

Next, a major hat tip to the folks at the MusOpen! site. This ambitious project is making free use recordings of public domain music available for anyone anytime. They even have a live streaming option so you can play the music in your gallery, restaurant, store or any other public arena — without ASCAP / BMI or anyone else asking you for money. This is a neat endeavor and it deserves our support!

Finally, if anyone would like to use any of the tracks from my own contribution to posterity — they are certainly welcome to…

Check out Eventbrite…

While the Eventbrite site has been around awhile I hadn’t had much occasion to use it before. However, in planning some events for 2010 I came to explore the workings and am really impressed. From all my testing it seems to be a great platform — and it’s free for no charge events.

If you need a way to register your attendees, or charge for tickets to a paid event, Eventbrite seems to be the bomb! Every time I play around on the site it makes me want to host a concert or something else people can register for. If you have any sort of event registration need, I encourage you to check it out

Disclosure: The links above are from the Eventbrite affiliate program, so if you use it New Mortar will get a small percentage of the sale. If you decide to sign up for their paid service, I’d appreciate you using this link. Thanks!

WordPress Wins CMS Award!

Hey, this is fantastic.

Our own favorite Content Management System, has won the Overall Best Open Source CMS Award in the 2009 Open Source CMS Awards. As Matt Mullenweg notes, this is great news:

“Every day thousands of new people are embracing WordPress to power not just their blogs but entire sites and communities without compromising on usability or scalability (as would be the case with a legacy CMS). Every member of the WordPress community, from core developer to beginning user, should be proud to be part of this momentum: congratulations to us all!”
